Anesthesia in Tupelo, MS

Sedation dentistry at North Mississippi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates is designed to help patients feel relaxed and experience less discomfort during dental procedures. By using advanced anesthesia techniques, sedation dentistry ensures a comfortable and less stressful experience, particularly for those with dental anxiety or undergoing complex treatments. The anesthesia options offered at our offices may include local anesthesia, nitrous oxide (laughing gas), IV sedation, and general anesthesia, which allow our team to tailor sedation to each patient’s needs for optimal comfort and care. For more information on dental sedation options, contact one of our locations in Corinth, Tupelo, or Southaven, MS.

Your procedure may look different depending on what anesthesia option is used. The anesthesia options we offer include:

  • Local Anesthesia: This involves administering a local anesthetic, such as lidocaine, directly to the surgical area, allowing you to remain fully conscious while eliminating pain in the targeted region. Known as "twilight sedation," t's commonly used for minor soft tissue procedures and simple tooth extractions.

  • Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas): Delivered through a nasal mask, nitrous oxide induces a calm and relaxed state, making it easier for patients to undergo procedures without anxiety or discomfort.

  • Office-Based General Anesthesia: This method involves administering IV medications to render the patient completely unconscious, ensuring they remain unaware and pain-free during extensive oral surgeries.

Each anesthesia method is selected based on the specific procedure and the patient's comfort level, ensuring a tailored and safe experience. In some cases, nitrous oxide or general anesthesia could be combined with local anesthetic.

What Are the Benefits of Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry presents several great benefits that could considerably improve the overall oral treatment experience for adults and children. Some of those benefits include:

  • Helps with patient cooperation and placement
  • Reduces the discomfort of dental visits
  • Minimizes dental anxiety and fear
  • Gives a feeling of time passing fast
  • Facilitates care for those with special needs
  • Inspires regular dentist appointments for routine care
  • Enables more than one treatment in a single visit
  • Limits memory of the visit for individuals who have dental trauma
  • Limits gag reflex during the course of the treatment

Dr Bauer and the staff are great, very helpful. I went in to have two wisdom teeth removed. I didn't respond well to the dental anesthesia, I wasn't calm or manageable. Any other doctor would've given me a higher dose and tried to continue the surgery, but Dr Bauer didn't. I was rescheduled for surgery under general anesthesia in the hospital. ((IMPORTANT NOTE The dental surgery cost is different from the hospital's cost for general anesthesia! I wasn't informed of that until I spoke with the hospital during pre-op.)) The hospital staff was excellent and the whole process was very smooth. I strongly distrust the medical world generally after so many bad experiences but I believe these people are trustworthy, and that's a lot coming from me.

After moving to Mississippi several years ago, I have had a terrible time trying to find a full sedation dental surgery center that will allow me to pursue the work I need to have done. I was referred to North Mississippi Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery by my dentist at Premiere Dental here in Tupelo for my process needs, and can’t even begin to tell you how amazing they were and have been. Professional, kind, respectful, gentle, and attentive are just the tip of it all. They treated me with the care you would expect from family and never made me feel that my concerns were silly or that I was being unreasonable in my concerns. I still have several procedures left to undergo to complete my needed healthcare results, but I am so very at ease now with what is to come, and that is in absolute thanks to the Doctors and staff at this facility. If you are looking for a facility that will take care of you properly, and be mindful of your needs, these are the folks, and this is the place.

I have been a nurse for 33 years. My experience with Dr. Roberts and his staff was outstanding. Everyone from the receptionist when I arrived…to the assistance getting into my truck….could not have been more nice and professional. On the day I was there, Casey and Chris helped Dr. Roberts with a tooth extraction that required sedation. Had some special needs due to my medical history. They were very understanding and made sure all my needs were met. I highly recommend North Mississippi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.

This was my first ever surgery and I was so nervous about being under anesthesia. Dr. West explained in detail how my 4 wisdom teeth extraction would go, what was wrong, and any complications that could possibly happen. I mentioned how I wanted to keep my wisdom teeth after the extraction and they listened. The surgery was quick and painless and they gave me all the instructions I needed for aftercare! Highly recommend!

Dr. West was amazing! The staff were great! Instructions were clear as day. They eased my anxiety and had me out before I knew it (thanks to the anesthesia!!)
